How Nossa Data Supported Telefónica in Reporting their ESG Data to the Market

How Nossa Data Supported Telefónica in Reporting their ESG Data to the Market

About Telefónica: Telefónica is one of the world’s leading telecommunications operators, with a presence across Europe and Latin America. TIME Magazine recognised Telefónica as the second Most Sustainable Company in the world in 2025. For FY 2024, Telefónica published a dedicated ESG Data Book (together with its ESG Profile) demonstrating their commitment to leadership in sustainability. The ESG Data Book is a comprehensive resource that goes beyond mandatory disclosure to voluntarily report additional indicators about Telefónica. About Nossa Data: Nossa Data is a London‑based ESG reporting and data management software and advisory company. Their speciality is in helping listed companies benchmark, collect data and publish ESG disclosures across multiple frameworks. Nossa Data’s value lies in automating much of the ESG workflow (data ingestion, template management, validation, benchmarking, analytics) and extensive experience across ESG Benchmarks and standard setters.

The Challenge: Addressing the requirements of both regulation (CSRD) and ESG Market Stakeholders

As a first-wave company under CSRD, Telefónica needed to disclose their sustainability data in alignment with the ESRS but also maintain their existing leadership position in sustainability which has been established over decades. Telefónica’s aim was to centralise their ESG disclosure so that all key mandatory and voluntary environmental, social and governance data points would be accessible in one consolidated publication for stakeholders.

Telefónica wanted an output structure that met three critical needs:

  1. Usability for analysts and stakeholders: ESG analysts, rating agencies, and investors should be able to navigate, filter and compare indicators easily (e.g., emissions, workforce, policy in a consistent format.)
  2. Machine and AI readability: As ESG data is increasingly consumed via AI models and automated systems, the data needed to be easily extractable, consistent, and clean (with well defined structure providing clear data units and sources).
  3. Deliver a comprehensive set of quantitative and qualitative data: Telefónica wanted market stakeholders to easily source both their quantitative and qualitative data. As a large company, while a large portion of data is available in the annual report, they also wanted to reference additional public documents as well as provide source data on areas of market interest.

The Process

Working in a software and advisory capacity, Nossa Data collaborated with Telefónica to overcome their data challenges. The data book created was a huge collaboration effort in which multiple areas and teams (people, data governance, environmental, legal) have contributed data points, demonstrating Telefónica's commitment across all departments.

  • Identifying ESG data points to disclose: Using Nossa Data’s expertise across the voluntary and regulatory disclosure landscape, Nossa Data supported Telefónica to identify disclosure requirements. As part of this process, Nossa Data aggregated over a thousand data points from Telefónica’s priority stakeholders.
  • ESG Data Taxonomy: After finalising and prioritising the data points to be disclosed, the datapoints were organised thematically to ensure similar data points were grouped together and the final output would be easy to navigate.
  • Voluntary vs Regulatory Mapping: Nossa Data supported Telefónica by mapping their voluntary disclosure requirements to the regulatory requirements specifically under CSRD.
  • Mapping Data to a Machine Readable format: After knowing what data needed to be collected and it was organised for publication. The format focused on ensuring that both humans and machines could easily find data on the business.
  • Collecting Data and understanding methodology: The groups collaborated by gathering data from internal stakeholders, assessing data versus market requirements. Sustainability-related risks were identified and assessed as part of the process.

The Outcome: Consolidating data into a publicly accessible ESG Data Book

The final publication was an excel providing quantitative and qualitative information of Telefónica’s business for FY2024.

  • Data published spanned Environmental, Social and Governance topics at Telefónica, ranging from disclosure on human rights and data privacy and security, to GHG emissions and supplier sustainability standards.
  • Over 60 public documents were cited within the document, including policies, frameworks, websites, reports among others. The final output became a source linking the vast array of key company documents for stakeholders.
  • While this document was prepared in line with the first fiscal year that Telefónica reported under CSRD, the format can subsequently be used for future reporting years to show year-on-year progress.

Some key aspects of Telefónica’s ESG Data Book:

ESG Data Taxonomy: Information is organised thematically for users of the ESG Data Book. Category begins with links to relevant policies about the topic.

Quantitative and Qualitative Performance Data Combined: Telefónica’s Data Book combines a consistent format for both the company’s quantitative as well as qualitative language.  Data follows the structure of: Metric, type, year, source, comments - for ease of comparison. Source data is always available.

Usable for multiple fiscal years: While this outcome focused on FY2024, the first year of CSRD required disclosure - many aspects of the report can be used for multiple fiscal years. For example, information on overall company governance structures is not so likely to change annually and can be leveraged for multiple reporting cycles.
