Trends in Biotechnology Companies Sustainability Disclosure

I conducted research across 160 companies in the biotechnology industry to understand their overall performance in Sustainability disclosure. The research started by understanding the ESG ratings of all companies from this industry and then did a deep dive into who the market views as the strongest sustainability players. 

How does Biotechnology align with the GICS coding: 

• Sector: Health Care (Code 35)
  
• Industry Group: Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology & Life Sciences (Code 3520)

• Sub‑Industry: Biotechnology

This sub‑industry classification captures companies whose principal business activity involves the research, development, and commercialization of biologically derived products, including therapeutics, diagnostics, genetic engineering, and cell and gene therapies.

The full list of companies that were included in this research is at the bottom of this article. The regional breakdown of companies assessed is shown below: 

Germany: 2

Denmark: 3

United Kingdom: 5

Netherlands: 5

United States: 145

Ratings Performance: I looked at their ESG performance data from ESG ratings frameworks: such as ISS (Institutional Shareholder Services), CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), MSCI, and Sustainalytics.I also looked at their stock price trend for the last year. 

Rating Agency Summary:

ISS: Recursion Pharmaceuticals was also the highest scoring ISS company scoring a B and PRIME Status. They were the only company to get a B on ISS from the group. C+ was the most common score with 66 companies achieving that score. Roughly half of the companies on the list were ISS PRIME at 74 of 160 companies. PRIME was awarded for companies that achieved a C+ or higher. 

CDP: The only company from the list who had a CDP score was Abbvie Inc who had a B in both CDP Climate Change and CDP Forests. Our research did not reveal CDP scores for the other companies. 

MSCI: Only 1 company, Gilead Science Inc, was able to achieve an AAA. The rest of the companies fell between AA to B with the BB having the highest number of companies at 56 of 160. 

Sustainalytics: Sustainalytics, where a lower score is better, the best performing company was Recursion Pharmaceuticals with a 17.6. The spread of performance was 17.6 to 41.3 with an average of 31.1. 

In terms of growth rate, x40 companies were viewed as fast growing which we defined as a 10% or higher rise in stock price over the last 12 months. Within this group ISS and Sustainalytics were lower overall. For ISS, none of the fastest growing companies were able to achieve over a C+ grade and for Sustainaltytics the best score was Gilead Science. MSCI ratings were roughly aligned with the fast growing sub-group and the wider industry. 

Finally, to start deeper company research I looked into the companies with the highest ratings across all three of the major agencies. For MSCI this was an A or above. For Sustainalytics a score of 26 or under and for ISS a C+ and PRIME score. This created a list of 12 companies who I conducted deeper research on. Those 12 companies are listed below: 

ABBVIE INC.: Only CDP responder from the group. A stand- alone 54 page ESG Action Report is published and extensive policy disclosure on their website. 

ALNYLAM PHARMACEUTICALS, INC.: Publishes a 94 page Corporate Responsibility Report. Significant comms on Patient Access. 

AMGEN INC.: A 26 page Sustainability Highlights report was published. Also significant comms around Access to Healthcare. 

ARGENX SE: CSRD aligned Annual Report with extensive communication across topics. Discussion on compliance and how they interact with the healthcare community. 

BAVARIAN NORDIC A/S: CSRD aligned Annual Report.S4, Consumers and End Users heavily considered. 

BIOGEN INC.: Published a 76 page Corporate Social Responsibility Report. SASB Index included in disclosure. 

EXACT SCIENCES CORPORATION: 75 page Responsible Business Report was published. Also publish SASB and TCFD reports and a Corporate Impact webpage. 

GENMAB A/S: CSRD Aligned Annual Report. Statements around Patient Advocacy.  

GILEAD SCIENCES, INC.: 83 page Responsible Business and Impact Report. Key aim to Advance Access and Health Equity. 

Lyell Immunopharma Inc: Has a 2023 ESG report but nothing for 2024. (As of 30 July 2025). 2023 Report is 19 pages. 

MODERNA, INC.: Has a 2023 ESG Report but nothing for 2024. (As of 30 July 2025. 2023 Report is 61 pages long. They have extensive policies and statements on key issues within Sustainability topics. 

REGENERON PHARMACEUTICALS, INC.: Published a 71 page 2024 report. They also do an additional Data Summary and a Materiality Assessment Statement.
