State of Climate report 2023 key highlights

The state of climate report discusses climate change action at the COP28 following findings from the first Global Stocktake, which evaluates progress under the Paris Agreement. 

Key highlights of the report include:

  1. Assessment of progress: The report evaluates progress across various sectors towards 1.5°C-aligned targets set by the Paris Agreement. It reveals that some progress has been mad but it falls short of the necessary pace and scale.
  2. Sectoral targets: Sectoral targets are outlined for power, buildings, industry, transport, forests and land, and food and agriculture. These targets aim to guide efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change.
  3. Current status: Only one out of 42 indicators assessed is on track to reach its 2030 target. 
  4. Need for accelerated action: The report emphasises the urgent need for accelerated action across sectors. 
  5. Bright spots: There is progress in adopting zero-carbon technologies like solar and wind power, electric vehicles, and heat pumps.
